Dallas Guesthouse

Dallas, TX

This renovation provides clarity to an unremarkable and poorly illuminated guest house in Dallas. To simplify a visually cluttered living room, for example, the design team conceived a dropped ceiling to conceal trusses that had dominated views of the space. The move also created a significant plenum, where a new, deep skylight filters incoming sunshine. Similar skylights were inserted into the bedroom and bathroom, thereby maximizing controlled daylight penetration. Luminaires and HVAC systems are also integrated within the new plenum. Through additional clarifications of the floor plan, storage, and material palette, the design is memorable, as well as complementary to the homeowner’s collection of modern furniture and global artifacts.
